What is an inclusive environment?
Designed and managed to allow people with a diverse range of needs and abilities to access it.
What is inclusive design?
Designing a space that everyone can use with no barriers that prevent use of the space. E.g. lifts, wider openings and ramps.
Can you name the purpose of inclusive design?
- Make places everyone can use
- Aims to remove barriers to create undue effort and separation an enables everyone to participate equally in everyday activities
- Can be used by and considers the needs of all users
- An inclusive environment is the result of inclusive design
What are the principles of inclusive design?
Put people first.
Acknowledge diversity.
Providing a choice.
Flexibility.
Creating a positive experience for all.
What are the benefits of inclusive design?
Promotes diversity.
Attracts more users.

What is the Equality Act 2010?
Provides legal protection against discrimination and inequality.
What are some requirements of the Equality Act?
Requires reasonable adjustments to be made for people with protected characteristics.
Provides access statement and audit for premises.
Obligations fall to all controllers of let premises.
What is the test for reasonableness?
Effectiveness of adjustment.
Practicality of adjustment.
Financial cost.
Likely disruption.
How is the Equality Act enforced?
By the law but often will have to be addressed by individuals protected under the act.
What is Part M?
Approved Document setting out Building Regulations for accessibility.
Would following Part M ensure inclusive design?
Not necessarily, there could still be a case made under the Equality Act.
How does NPPF promote inclusive environments?
Identifies the need for planning policies to create safe, inclusive, accessible spaces.
What are the different types of discrimination identified under the Equality Act?
- Direct – treated differently than others as a result of protected characteristics
- Indirect – company policy disadvantages a certain group of people
- Harassment – any unwelcome behaviour
- Victimisation – singling out an individual
