What is a National Scenic Area
Scottish area of protection for the landscape, equal to English AONB.

What is a SSSI
Site of Special Scientific Interest for land and water representing National heritage. Examples are:
Flora
Fauna
Geology
Geomorphy

What requires NatureScot Consent for SSSI
Activities out with daily management which may cause damage for example: Use of machinery, helicopters, events.
What is peatland restoration?
Re-wetting and restoring Scotlands Peatland. Peat holds Carbon and grants are available through NatureScot Peatland Action fund for this.
What is the Peatland Code?
Set of best practise requirements for Peatland. By registering with the Peatland Code you can ensure the carbon benefit will be measured and monitored. Buyers can therefore be confident buying carbon units.
What are carbon credits?
Buying the right to the carbon storage.
Where can you buy Carbon Credits?
Direct from the developer/Estate owner or through a broker similar to purchasing stocks.
What is the Woodland code?
Verification similar to the Carbon Code. Once verified you can generate PIU (Pending Insurance Units). These can then be converted to Woodland Carbon units. Woodland Carbon Code schemes can last 35-100 years.
What is habitat monitoring?
Habitat monitoring is an annual survey of moorland habitats to assess damage from deer and sheep.
Why do we manage deer?
To ensure a healthy population
To protect habitat such as heather and trees

What level of deer should Estates have?
Less than 10 per KM square
What is the AECS scheme?
An agricultural scheme to promote environmental improvements. You receive capital payments or payments per acreage for works such as wild bird seed planting, grass margins, wader scrapes.
What works require a SEPA CAR License?
A CAR license comes under the Water Environment (Controlled Activites)(Scotland) Regulations 2011.
You need a license for works including:
Discharges
Diffuse pollution
Abstractions
Engineering works
Groundwater works
May need a separate license for:
Hazardous waste storage
Slurry storage
Herbicide applications
Transporting waste
