What is a manager?
responsible for setting objectives, organising
resources and motivating staff so that the organisation’s aims are met
What are the 5 functions of management?
Setting objectives and planning Resource management Motivating staff coordinating activities controlling and measuring performance against targets
How can these functions been divided into roles?
Interpersonal roles
Informational roles
Decisional roles
What are the interpersonal roles?
Figurehead- Symbolic leader undertakes duties of social or legal nature
Leader- Motivating subordinates; selection and training other managers/ staff
Liaison- Links managers and leaders of other division
What are the informational roles and what do they do?
Monitor (receive)- collects data relevant to the business
Disseminator- Spreads info collected from external and internal sources -> Relevant people
Spokesperson- Speaks about the organisation to external groups and people- talks about its goals and ambitions
What are the decisional roles and what do they do?
Entrepreneur- looks for new opportunities to develop the business
Disturbance handler- responds to threats caused by the changing environment
Resource allocator- Decides were money and machinery
Negotiator- Represents business in negotiations with other groups such as the government
