What is autocratic leadership?
a style of leadership that keeps all
decision-making at the centre of the organisation
What is democratic leadership?
a leadership style that promotes the active participation of workers in
decision making process
What is paternalistic leadership?
a leadership style based on the approach that the manager is in a better position than the workers to know what is best for an organisation.
What is Laissez- faire leadership?
a leadership style that leaves much of the business decision-making to the workforce
4 Features of autocratic leadership
Leaders takes all decisions
Gives little information to staff
Supervises workers closely
Only one way communication
Cons of autocratic leadership?
Demotivates staff who want to contribute and accept responsibility
No staff input on decisions
When would you use Autocratic Leadership?
Times of crises or when decisions need to be quick.
Defence force and police use it
3 Features of democratic leadership?
Participation encouraged
Two way communications used allows feed back from staff
Workers given information about the business to allow full staff involvement
Cons of democratic leadership?
Input from staff can be time consuming
Levels of involvement emerged based on the sensitivity or secrecy
When would democratic leadership be used?
Experienced and flexible workforce would benefit the most.
When innovation is required for problems
3 Features of a paternalistic leadership?
Managers do what they think is best for workers
Some consultation can occur but final decision is up to managers
Managers want workers to be happy in their jobs
Drawback to Paternalistic leadership?
Dissatisfaction stemming from lack of real power or influence
When is Paternalistic leadership used?
When workforce is inexperienced and young.
Managers have a genuine concern for their workers interest .
Managers are usually experienced
Features of Laissez- faire?
All authority and decision making is delegated
Staff are free to achieve their goals in whatever method they want
