What is a manager
Takes control of administrating, directing and ensuring that goals are being reached?
What is a leader?
Someone that creates a vision, inspires others to follow and move towards reaching it
What are the differences between managers and leaders?
Leaders- inspire and motivate , consider long term strategies and to overcome challenges, encouraging sight of vision
Managers- control and direct, follow what has been set by the leaders, recruit staff, ensure product or service is profitable
What are the characteristics of a leader?
- intellectual skills, interpersonal skills, realistic aspirations, adapting to employees
What is MBO ( management by objectives) ?
Objectives are definite and delegated to different firms, when all objectives from firms added together then it should equal the whole organisations end result
What are the advantages of MBO?
- improved control, managers understand who reached what goal
- improved financial control of managing revenue and expenditure
- improved communication up and down hierarchy
- motivate workforce, commitment to reaching goals
What are the disadvantages of MBO?
- seen as controlling
- business environment is constantly ongoing , some goals may become unrealistic or less important
- time consuming, time is spent on setting objectives , rather than managing the business
What is the MBO process ?
1) review objectives
2) set objectives for management
3) set objectives for individuals
4) monitor progress
5) evaluate progress
What are characteristics of a theory x manager?
- workers constantly supervised
- workers motivated by money
- workers do not want to decision make
What are characteristics of a theory y manager?
- employees are ambitious and want to progress
- employees are motivated by more than money
- employees can be trusted to work independently.
what are the characteristics of a autocratic leader?
-they are a theory x manager
- make all the decisions and does not get involvement from employees
- high levels of supervision and input over employees
- workers are dependant on the leader
- they are advantageous in times of crisis
what are the characteristics of a paternalistic leader?
- persuades workers to follow
- leader makes all decisions
- leader considers welfare of employees and makes decisions in their best interest
-similar to autocratic
what are the characteristics of democratic leader?
- workers are consulted with decision making
- leader consults with subordinates
-there is high communication from employees to gain feedback - it promotes creativity and participation
-leaders require good communication skills
what are the characteristics of laissez faire leader?
- leader gives minimal guidance and input, risking productivity levels as employees not be motivated enough
-workers left alone to get on with their jobs
-opportunity for workers to demonstrate their capabilities, freedom and creativity
what are the characteristics of a bureaucratic leader?
- develop specialisation of jobs
- clearly defined job roles
operate in strict hierarchal structures - job roles are obligated to be stuck to , therefore finding a cover/replacement can be tricky
