2nd to 6th ribs
Name of the connective tissue of the breast
Parenchyma
What do lactiferous sinuses do?
Store milk
What are lactiferous ducts?
Collect milk from the lactiferous lobules (15-20) and carries it towards the nipple. Then becomes the lactiferous sinus which goes into a milk duct.
What prevents the muscle from sagging?
Inframammary ligaments
Which structures provide support to the breast?
Suspensory ligaments of Cooper
Explain the lymph system in the breasts
There are two types of lymph - superficial and deep
Superficial - drain the skin but not the areolar or nipple
Deep - drains the areolar, nipple and parenchyma
Where do the lymphs in the breast go?
75% go to the axillary lymphs
Rest go to the internal mammary lymph nodes
3 arteries that supply the breast
- Subclavian artery
- Thoracic artery (continues on from subclavian)
- Axillary artery
Veins in the mammary gland
- Internal thoracic vein
- Axillary vein
- Forth intercostal vein
Which nerves supply lactation in the breast?
4th and 6th intercostal nerves
Which spinal dermatome are responsible for sensation in the nipple
T4 spinal dermatome
How can breast cancer spread?
Via the lymphatic system
What type of glands are present in the areolar and what do they secrete?
Modified sebaceous glands containing tubercles of Montgomery which lubricate the nipples and prevent them from cracking
