CRANIAL NERVES Flashcards
Cranial nerve I name, function, type of neurone
Olfactory nerve - sensory
- Sense of smell
- distinguishing smells
- Supplies nasal mucosa
Cranial nerve II name, function, type of neurone
Optic - sensory
Supplies the brain with visual information from the eyes
Cranial nerve III name, function, type of neurone
Oculomotor - motor
Allows for adduction, depression and elevation in the eyes and pupil constriction which is from parasympathetic innervation
Cranial nerve IV name, function, type of neurone
Trochlear - motor
Enables movement in the superior oblique of the eye and allows the eye to move down and out
Cranial nerve V name, function (3) , type of neurone
Trigeminal - both
Ophthalmic - sends sensory info such as pain, temp, and proprioception from the upper face, skull and eye
Maxillary - sensation to the middle region of the face including teeth, palate and gums
Mandibular - Helps ears to soften loud sounds and helps keep chemical balance and pressure between the ears
Cranial nerve VI name, function, type of neurone
Abducens - motor
Allows eyes to move towards the side of the head away from the nose. It innervates the lateral rectus muscle which is an extra ocular muscle
Cranial nerve VII name, function, type of neurone
Facial - both
Responsible for facial expressions, taste in the anterior 2/3 of the tongue and innervation of the submandibular gland
Cranial nerve VIII name, function, type of neurone
Vestibulocochlear - sensory
Vestibular - info about head position and movement - keep balance and maintain posture to the brain
Cochlear - carries auditory info to the brain
Two nerves join together in the cranial nuclei to form the vestibulocochlear nerve
Cranial nerve IX name, function, type of neurone
Glossopharyngeal - both
Sensory: Carries sensory and taste info from posterior 1/3 of tongue. Carries sensory info from the carotid artery and carotid sinus
Motor: motor innervation to the stylopharyngeus muscle which is responsible for the elevation of the larynx and pharynx during speaking and swallowing
Also controls the upper pharynx, tonsils, outer ear, eardrum and eustachian tube.
Cranial nerve X name, function, type of neurone
Vagus - both
Sensory: Supplies the epiglottis and the laryngopharynx. Parasympathetic innervation and visceral sensation of the thorax and abdomen
Motor: pharynx, larynx and one tongue muscle
Cranial nerve XI name, function, type of neurone
Accessory - motor
Cranial nerve XII name, function, type of neurone
Hypoglossal - motor
