Mysticetes - whales
Odontocetes - dolphins and porpoises
What are Mysticetes?
Large
Instead of teeth they have baleen plates that hang from the upper jaw
They filter feed
Migrate huge distances
Makes use songs to communicate and attract mates
Communicate with low frequency sound - 10-20 Hz
What are Odontocetes?
Pilot whale - short broad jaws - powerful for large prey
Long narrow jaws for fast closing
What are the smallest odontocetes?
Porpoises - live coastally and feed frequently - heat loss due to small surface area
What are the largest Odontocetes?
Sperm whales - females stay in the tropics while the males migrate
What are the fresh water and ice Odontocetes?
River dolphins
Narwhals

Echolocation

Fully aquatic grazers in shallow waters
