Examples of Malignant Lesions
- SCC
- Basal cell carcinoma
- Karposi sarcoma
- T cell lymphoma
- Oral melanoma
What is the prognosis of SCC?
5 year survival is 45-50%. Poor
Tumours of oropharynx are linked to?
Oncogenic strains of HPV 16 and 18
Predisposing Factors of SCC?
- Tobacco, excessive alcohol, betel nut chewing
- HPV or EBV infection
- UV exposure
- Exposure to environmental pollutants
SCC is derived from?
Mucosal epithelium of oral cavity and pharynx
What are examples of premalignant lesions?

Erythroplakia
Actinic cheilosis
Erosive lichen planus
Where does SCC metastasize to?
Lymph nodes
What are the common site of lymph node metastasis?
- Preauricular and parotid nodes
- Peri-auricular nodes and suboccipital nodes
- Retropharyngeal nodes
What is the etiology of Basal Cell Carcinoma?
Chronic exposure to UV radiation
Basal layer of epithelium proliferates and invade into underlying tissue
Prognosis of melanoma?
5 year survival 45%. Poor
Where does melanoma metastasize to?
Lymph nodes then blood
Treatment of Melanoma
Surgical wide excision + Nearby lymph nodes + Immunotherapy
Types of treatment for head and neck cancer
- Surgery
- Radiation
- Chemotherapy
- Targeted therapy
Where can skin graft be taken from?
Radial forearm flap
What is used to treat oropharyngeal cancer?
External beam radiation therapy given as daily fractions 5 days a week for 7 weeks
