what is Glaucoma?
affects sight, it develops when fluid doesn’t drain properly and so the pressure inside the eye ball increases.
Effects of glaucoma?
progressive deterioration of vision, if not treated.
what factors contribute towards glaucoma?
Age
genetics
high blood pressure
what are the two types of Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)?
Dry- the most common- develops when cells of the macular become damaged by a build up of deposits called drusen.
Wet- when abnormal blood vessels form underneath the macular and damage its cells.
What are the effects of AMD?
> results in loss of central vision, usually in both eyes.
> blurred vision- reading can become difficult, colours appear dull, and difficulty recognising peoples faces
What is retinopathy?
Linked to diabetes- occurs when high blood sugar levels damage the cells of the retina, an effect of diabetes.
what is the cause of retinopathy?
the retina constantly needs a supply of blood from a tiny blood vessel. overtime, high blood sugar levels can cause the blood vessel to narrow & leak, damaging the retina and stopping it from working.
what is the effect of retinopathy?
Blindness, individuals should monitor and maintain a healthy lifestyle to mange their diabetes.
