Male Sex Hormones Flashcards
What does males have that females don’t?
SRY gene
What does the SRY gene do?
Directs the medulla of the bipotential gonad to develop into testes
What does the Anti-Mullerian hormone from the testes do?
Cause Mullerian duct to disappear
What does testosterone from the testes do?
Convert Wolffian duct into seminal vesicle, vas deferens + epididymis
What does DHT do?
Controls prostate + external genitalia development
What is testosterone?
Potent androgen
Where is testosterone synthesised?
Leydig cells
Some from adrenal cortex
What is testosterone for?
Development + maintenance of make secondary sexual characteristics
What is testosterone converted into?
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
Estradiol
What converts testosterone to DHT?
5-alpha reductase
What are the actions of testosterone?
Stimulates enlargement of testes + male accessory organs
Stimulates development of male secondary sex characteristics
What secondary characteristics does testosterone develop?
Increased growth of body hair
Enlargement of larynx + thickening of vocal cords
Thickening of skin
Muscle growth, widening of shoulders + narrowing of waist
Thickening + strengthening of bones
How does DHT work?
Binds to cytoplasmic androgen receptors
= releases heat shock protein
Steroid receptor complex migrates to nucleus
Binds to DNA that contains androgen response elements
Drives expression of genes that determine male phenotype
What are the hormones secreted by?
Hypothalamus
Anterior pituitary gland
Testes
What are the functions of the hormones?
Development of sperm cells
Development of secondary sex characteristics
