Male Reproductive system Flashcards
What are gonads?
Give examples
Organs that produce gametes.
Testes or Ovaries
What are Gametes?
Give Examples
Cells that contain 1/2 of the total number of chromosomes in body cells.
Sperm/ova
What are haploid cells?
Cells that contains half a complete set of chromosomes.
What is the typical complete number of chromosomes in a human cell?
46
How are gamete cells produced?
Through meiosis
What are accessory structures and ducts of the reproductive system?
Structures that support the development and functionality of gamete cells and transport them.
What are the testes?
Pair of oval organs where sperm are produces.
Where are the testes originally located?
How are they held in place?
Originate near the iliac crest.
Anchored to the inferior body wall by the gubernaculum.
How do the testes travel during fetal maturation?
As fetus matures, the gubernaculum shortens, pulling the testes through opening and located in scrotum.
What is the opening that that the testes exit through?
Inguinal canal
What is the muscle that lines the scrotum?
Dartos muscle.
What are the two layers of tissue that surround the testes?
- Germinal Epithelium
- Tunica Albugenia
What is germinal epithelium?
Very thin, superficial covering of testes
What is the tunica albugenia?
Deep, thick, white connective tissue that folds and divides testes into lobules.
About how many lobules are in each testis?
150-300
1-3 ____ _____ are housed inside each lobule of the testes.
Seminiferous tubules
What are the seminiferous tubules?
Coiled, tiny tubes where sperm is made.
What are the three type of cells that make up the seminiferous tubules?
- Spermatogonia
- Sertoli Cells
- Interstitial cells of Leydig
What are spermatogonia cells?
Immature stem cells that undergo cell division.
Offspring become sperm cells
What and where are Sertoli Cells?
Cells that aid in process of sperm production. Between spermatogonia cells
What are Interstitial cells of Leydig?
Cells between the folds of seminferous tubules.
Region where seminiferous tubes merge and exit the testes:
Rete Testis
What do the rete testis open into?
Efferent Ducts
What is the Epididymis?
Where is it?
Tear-drop shaped structure made of long folded tubes.
Located superior to the Testes
