Female Reproductive System Flashcards
What are the functions of the female reproductive system?
- Produce egg cells
- Site of embryo implantation and growth
- Facilitate birth
What is the process in which ova are creted?
Oogenesis
The gonads of the female reproductive system are:
Ovaries
What are the ovaries and where are they located?
Almond-shaped pair of organs
Situated in Ovarian Fossa on lateral edges of abdominopelivc wall
What two ligaments hold the ovaries in place?
- Suspensory Ligament
- Ovarian Ligament
What does the Suspensory Ligament do?
Holds ovary to body wall.
What does the ovarian ligament do?
Hold ovaries to uterus.
What are the layers of the ovaries?
- Germinal Epithelium
- Tunica Albugenia
Explain the layers of tissue of the ovaries:
- Germinal epithelium is the thin, superficial layer.
- Tunica albugenia is the deeper, fibrous layer.
What are the regions of the ovaries?
- Cortex
- Medulla
Explain the regions of the ovaries:
- Cortex is the are that contains the developing eggs.
- Medulla is the inner, smaller region that helps hold eggs in place (connective tissue)
What are the 4-7 inch long tubes between the ovaries and the uterus?
Fallopian tubes
What are the regions of the fallopian tubes?
- Infundibulum
- Fimbriae
- Ampulla
- Isthmus
What is the infundibulum of the fallopian tubes?
Funnel-shaped end near ovary.
What are the fimbriae of the fallopian tubes?
Finger-like projections that guide the ovulated egg to the fallopian tube
What are the ampulla of the fallopian tubes?
Wide region that encircles the ovary
What are the isthmus of the fallopian tubes?
Narrow region that join the uterus
What are the layers of the walls of the fallopian tubes?
- Mucosa
- Muscularis
- Serosa
What is the mucosa layer of the fallopian tubes and what does it do?
Deepest lining that produces secretions that nourish the ova
What is the muscularis layer of the fallopian tube?
Middle layer of smooth muscle that provides peristalsis.
What is the serosa layer of the fallopian tubes?
Most superficial layer.
Where does fertilization occur and about how long must fertilization occur after ovulation?
- Fallopian tubes
- 36 hours once the ova enters fallopian tubes
How long does the embryo typically travel through the fallopian tube?
4-5 days.
What is the uterus?
Very muscular, pear-shaped structure that houses embryo during maturation.
