Male Reproductive System Flashcards
The organs that produce gametes (sperm/egg) and hormones
- Testis
- Ovary
Gonads
Secrete fluids in the ducts of the reproductive system
Accessory glands and organs
Structures of the perineum
External genitalia
Produces sperm and hormones
Testis
The site of sperm maturation
Epididymis
Conduct sperm between the testis and prostate gland
Ductus (vas) deferens
Secretes fluid that makes up most of the volume of semen
Seminal vesicle
Secretes fluid and enzymes
Prostate gland
Secretes mucus
Bulbourethral glands
Conducts semen to the exterior
Urethra
Contains erectile tissue, produces pleasurable sensations during sexual activity, and transports sperm
Penis
Surrounds the testes
Scrotum
Sperm production occurs
Seminiferous tubules
Coiled tube through which sperm pass while completing functional maturation
Epididymis
Connect the seminiferous tubules to the epididymis
Rete testis
Straight tubule
Enters the abdominal cavity
Ductus (vas) deferens
Tough, fibrous capsule
Tunic albuginea
Stimulates bone and muscle growth, establishes and maintains secondary sex characteristics, maintains the gland and organs of the male reproductive trans and has effects on libido (sexual drive)
Testosterone
Ascends to enter the abdominal cavity through the superficial inguinal ring. Also transports sperm from the epididymis
Ductus deferens
Includes the ductus deferent and blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic vessels that supply the testis
Spermatic cord
Passes behind the urinary bladder to reach the prostate gland
Ductus defernes
Located posterior to the urinary bladder. Produce roughly 60% of the volume of seminal fluid
Seminal vesicles
Encircles the proximal position of the urethra as it leaves the urinary bladder. Process roughly 30% of the volume of seminal fluid
Prostate gland
Empty into the urethra. Secrete a thick mucus that helps neutralize acids that remain in the urethra and also lubricates the tip of the penis
Bulbourethral glands
