Male reproductive Organs Flashcards
Prostate: anatomic position
Inferior to neck of bladder
Superior to external urethral sphincter
Inferiolateral: levator ani muscle
Prostate: zones
Central zone
Transitional zone
Peripheral zone
(Fibromuscular stroma)
Prostate: central zone
Surrounds ejaculatory ducts
25% of normal prostate
Prostate: transitional zone
Located centrally and surrounds urethra
5-10% of gland
Glands of transitional zone typically undergo BPH
Prostate: peripheral zone
Main body of the gland: 65%
Located posteriorly
Ducts from glands are vertically emptying into urethra. Tendency to permit urine reflux.
High incidence of acute/chronic inflammation: may be linked to high incidence of prostate carcinoma at peripheral zone
Prostate: fibromuscular stroma
Situated anterior in the gland
Merges with tissue of urogenital diaphragm
Prostate: blood supply
Prostatic arteries, branches of internal iliac (branches can arise from internal pudendal and middle rectal arteries)
Prostate: venous drainage
Prostatic venous plexus, drains into internal iliac veins
Prostate: innervation
Inferior hypogastric plexus
