Male Reproduction System Flashcards
What is semen?
sperm and seminal fluid that is released during ejaculation
What does the twist in the urethra do?
increases the propulsion of semen
What does the prostate gland do?
contains alkaline substances that neutralize acids to protect sperm
What does the cowper’s/bulbourethra gland do?
makes pre-ejaculatory fluids for lubrication
What is seminal fluid?
fluid medium in seminal vesicle
alkaline substances from prostate gland
pre-ejaculatory fluid from cowper’s gland
What does the seminal vesicle do?
contains a fluid medium that has nutrients for sperm and prostaglandin hormones
What do prostaglandin hormones do?
causes uterine contraction to assist in sperm propulsion
What does the vas deferens do?
stores mature sperm and it is the path out and merges with the urethra
What does the epididymis do?
Stores immature sperm and it is where maturation occurs
What does the scrotum do?
1) holds testicles
2) contracts/relaxes moving testicles to regulate temperature
What temperature does the body need to be to produce sperm?
a few degrees below body temperature
What is the seminiferous tubules?
site for sperm production
sperm production= spermatogenesis
What are the 3 pieces of sperm?
head piece, mid piece, tail flagella
What does the mitochondria in sperm do?
produces atp for the tail
What does the acrosome in sperm do?
contains enzymes to assist in egg penetration
