When he went to prison he joined the Nation of Islam

Poor people supported it as this movement also focused on improving the living situation of poor black americans in ghettos

Tommie Smith and John Carlos did the black power salute on the podium of their 200m race.
This caused a massive reaction as people verbally abused them and thre objects at them .
They were then suspended from the US team
