Malabsorption: Aetiology

A
  • Intake - diet
  • Digestion - pancreatic enzymes or bile insufficiency
  • Absorption - eg Crohn’s disease or coeliac

Malabsorption: Complications

A

Anaemia:
- Iron deficiency - microcytic
- B12 deficiency - macrocytic
- Combined haematinic anaemia - normocytic

Bleeding disorders:
- Low vitamin K so increased INR

Oedema:
- Low albumin - hypoalbuminaemic oedema

Metabolic Bone Disease - low vitamin D

Tropical Spure - causes deficiency of 2 or more nutrients
