Major Homeostatic Mechanisms Flashcards
Name an example of a negative feedback mechanism
Water regulation in the kidneys.
What is negative feedback?
Regulatory process to move variable in opposite direction to original change
Define a positive feedback loop
A mechanism that further pushes the response of initial change
Describe feed forward regulation and give an example
A mechanism that anticipates change, example prior contraction of your leg muscle to stabilize you to open a door
Name the two mechanisms of homeostasis
Neural and hormonal
What is the difference in communication between neural and hormonal communications?
Neural- uses Neurotransmitters and is very specific
Hormonal/endocrine - uses hormones and is very broad and long lasting
What are the three categories of cell to cell communication?
Neurotransmitters, hormones, and Paracrines/ Autocrines
