DSM Criteria
A
- 5 or more of symptoms must be present during the same 2 week period; at least one of the symptoms is either depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure: depressed mood; diminished interest or pleasure in all or almost all activities; weight loss when not dieting or weight gain; insomnia or hypersomnia nearly everyday; psychomotor agitation or retardation; fatigue or loss of energy nearly everyday; feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt; diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness; thoughts of death, recurrent suicidal ideation w/o a specific plan OR suicide attempt OR a specific plan for suicide
- impairment in life due to symptoms
- not attributed to substances or a medical issue
- not better explained by another mental illness
- no evidence of manic episode or a hypomania episode

No motivation or ability to carry out necessary tasks of ones life

A
Example: calling out to work to avoid the dread of work will make the client feel better momentarily but not long term

A
involves self-focused attention accompanied by a repetitive focus on negative emotional causes, symptoms and consequences

Behavioral; CBT; Medications; and apparently shock therapy
