DSM Criteria
- Restriction of energy intake relative to requirements, leading to significant low body weight
- Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, or persistent behavior that interviews with weight gain
- Disturbance in the way in which ones body weight or shape is experienced, undue influence of body weight or shape on self-evaluation or persistent lack of recognition of the seriousness of the current low body weight
Restricting type vs binge-eating/purging
Restricting: during 3 month period has not binged or purged in order to achieve weight loss. Done through food intake restriction
Bing-eating/purging: obvious what this one is.
Prevalence
High in young females and not as high in young males (but could be lack of reporting in young males)
Development and Course
Rarely starts before puberty or after 40.
Risk factors
anxiety disorders, parents who have engaged in it or support looks over anything.
Culture
Higher among post-industrialized countries and higher income countries. Less common in African American, Asian and Latino communities however this may be due to under utilization of services.
Suicide rates?
High, should continue to be assessed for suicidal ideation.
