Major Body Cavities and Membranes Flashcards
1
Q
body cavities
A
- two major body cavities
- the dorsal and ventral cavities are spaces within the body that contain and protect internal organs
2
Q
dorsal cavity
A
- located along the back of the body and head
- contains organs of the nervous system
- divided into two portions
- the cranial cavity located in the skull, surrounds and protects the brain
- the spinal cavity located within the spinal column, surrounds and protects the spinal cord
3
Q
ventral cavity
A
- located along the front of the body, contains the organs of the cardiac, pulmonary, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems
- divided into three cavities
- the thoracic cavity surrounds and protects the heart and lungs
- the abdominal cavity contains primarily the major organs of digestion
- the pelvic cavity is the space formed by the hip bones and contains primarily the organs of the reproductive and excretory systems
- there is no physical division between the abdominal and pelvic cavities - sometimes referred to as the abdominopelvic cavity
- inguinal = means relating to the groin, refers to the entire lower area of the abdomen. the groin is the crease at the junction of the trunk with the upper end of the thigh
4
Q
serous membrane covering the heart and lining the medistinum
A
pericardium
5
Q

A
ventral
