1A/1B in Main 1 | 2A/2B in Main 2
27
(MAIN PROPULSION) | True of False: Both shafts route inward, towards the centerline?
TRUE
28
What is the idle RPM for the main propulsion engine?
180 - 200 RPM Idle
29
Where is the Main thrust bearing?
Mounted to hull of ship, toward forward end of Main Reduction Gear (MRG) Each shaft has a thrust bearing that converts power from the shaft and propeller hub to the ship‘s hull.
30
Explain MRG?
Main Reduction Gear - Ratio of 3.14 : 1; One MRG per main engine. (2) Purpose: Turn high speed / low torque to low speed / high torque Two engines are attached through a main reduction gear to turn a shaft system with a controllable pitch propeller and there are two separate shaft systems.
31
Explain CPP?
Controllable Pitch Propellers Control direction and amount of thrust Allow ship to produce astern propulsion without changing the direction of shaft rotation 2 16.08 ft (4.9 m) 5 blade propellers designed for 20,800 SHP and 165 rpm 2 Rudders The propellers incorporate controllable pitch blades with a new high power low drag hub design that provides improved propeller efficiency.
32
Explain Main Propulsion
The Main Propulsion engines are four Colt-Pielstick Medium Speed Turbocharged Marine Diesels rated at 10,400 horsepower each, for a total of 41,600 shaft horsepower which can move the ship in excess of 22 knots. The main propulsion system is a two-shaft system. Each shaft system consists of two engines coupled to a single reversing main reduction gear turning a shaft with a controllable pitch, five blade, high power, low drag propeller hub
33
What is the main purpose of the main propulsion system?
The purpose of the main propulsion system is to provide continuous power to move the ship through the water. The Main Machinery Rooms provide space for the ship‘s main propulsion diesel engines (MPDE), reduction gears and other propulsion related systems and various auxiliary systems. The main propulsion system consists of 4 diesel engines, 2 main reduction gear sets, 2 shafts and 2 controllable pitch propellers. Both main machinery rooms contain identical main propulsion equipment
34
MPDE details?
Colt Pielstick 2.5 STC 10,400 horsepower each, for a total of 41,600 shaft horsepower
35
Where are the MRG's located?
Main Reduction Gears on the ship are located in the main machinery rooms and are attached to the aft end of the main engines. There is one reduction gear set in each main machinery room connected to the two main propulsion diesel engines in that space. The reduction gear configuration allows the two propellers to turn inboard and over the top. The main reduction gears reduce the high-speed engine rpm of the MPDE from 520 rpm to a useable 165 shaft rpm producing 234,300 lb. of thrust. The main reduction gears are a single reduction, double input and double helical, locked train gear system
36
What is Propulsion Shafting?
The shaft system converts power and torque from the MPDE and applies it to the ship‘s controllable pitch propeller system.
37
What are the bulkhead seals?
Bulkhead seals are installed in watertight bulkheads, around the shaft where the shaft passes through the watertight bulkhead, to prevent progressive flooding. Each shaft has a thrust bearing that converts power from the shaft and propeller hub to the ship‘s hull. Line shaft bearings are installed at intervals along the length of each shaft to support the weight of the shaft system.
38
What are stern tube seals?
Stern tube seals prevent seawater from coming in around the shaft where the shaft exits the ship‘s hull
39
What is the purpose of the CPP system?
The purpose of the Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) System is to apply torque from the shaft system to the propeller. The CPP applies thrust to the propeller system to move the ship through the water. The CPP is an electro-hydraulic system designed to function automatically. When a malfunction occurs in the automatic CPP system, the system can be switched to manual ahead mode. The propellers are five blade propellers with a high power low drag propeller hub. Each propeller is 16 feet in diameter and turns inboard over the top.
