Criteria for MAID

A
  • Have to be eligible for Canada Health Services (Be a Canadian Citizen)
  • Older than 18 years old and is capable of making health decisions
  • Medical conditions causes physical or psychological suffering (Does not include mental conditions)
  • Voluntary consent for MAID
  • Informed consent after being informed of all other alternatives
  • Informed consent at time of request and immediately before MAID

- Extra steps to provide patient with sufficient time if they change their minds

- Safeguards

A
  • Medical/Nurse Practitioner deems that patient meets criteria for MAID
  • Documentation of informed consent of MAID
  • Second independent Medical/Nurse Practitioner provides written opinion that patient meets criteria
  • Reliable means of communication with patient
  • Immediately before MAID informed consent is given by patient

Natural Unoreseeable Death
- Safeguards

A

All of the same requirements Natural Foreseeable Death, plus:
- Have to consult with an expert on patient’s conditions
- Have to offer other options for relieving suffering
- Have to ensure patient has given serious consideration to other options
- MAID can only occur 90 days after first assessment unless loss of capacity is imminent
