Magnets and Magnetic Fields Flashcards
What are the two poles of a magnet?
North and South Poles.
What are North Poles attracted to?
South Poles.
What are South Poles attracted to?
North Poles.
What do North Poles repel?
North Poles.
What do South Poles repel?
South Poles.
Is magnetic force a contact or non-contact force?
A non-contact force because the magnets don’t have to be touching for the force to apply.
What are the 3 magnetic metals?
Iron, Nickel and Cobalt.
What is a magnetic field?
An area where a magnetic material will experience a force.
What is a permanent magnet?
A magnet with its own magnetic field.
What are magnetic field lines?
Lines that represent the magnetic field in an diagram. These lines always come out of the North Pole of the magnet and in to the South.
What if the magnetic field lines are closer together?
This shows that the magnetic field is stronger in that area.
What if the magnetic field lines are further apart?
This shows that the magnetic field is weaker in that area.
How do you find the shape of a magnetic field?
Using plotting compasses and iron filings.
How do compasses work?
The Earth has its own magnetic field that is strong enough to reach around the whole world.
