Conduction Flashcards
1
Q
What is conduction?
A
The transfer of thermal energy by the vibration of particles.
2
Q
What happens every time particles collide?
A
The particles transfer thermal energy.
3
Q
Why does conduction happen effectively in solids?
A
The particles in solids are closer together so they collide more often as they vibrate around a fixed point.
4
Q
Why are metals good thermal conductors?
A
They contain electrons which are free to move.
5
Q
What happens in conduction?
A
The thermal energy will be transferred from an area which has a high thermal energy store to an area where there is a low thermal energy store.
6
Q
Why are gasses and liquids poor conductors?
A
Their particles are spread out so do not collide often - insulators.
