Magnetic Compass Flashcards
What limitations does the magnetic compass have?
Jewel and pivot type mounting gives the flow freedom to rotate and tilt up approximately 18° angle of bank.
At steeper bank angles, Compass indications are erratic & unpredictable.
How does the magnetic compass work?
Magnets mounted on the Compass card aligned themselves parallel to the Earth’s line of magnetic force.
What are the various compass errors?
Oscillation error: erratic movement caused by turbulence
Deviation error: due to electrical & magnetic disturbances in plane
Variation error: angular difference between true and magnetic North, reference isogonic lines of variation.
Dip errors: Accelerate North decelerate south.
Northerly turning errors: undershoot North overshoot south.
