Synopsis
Clouds & weather
12-18 hour categorical outlook
What are in-flight aviation weather advisories?
Forecasts that advise enroute aircraft of developing hazardous weather.
What is a convective SIGMET?
Implies severe/greater turbulence, severe icing, & low level wind shear.
Surface winds greater than or equal to 50 knots
Hail
Embedded thunderstorms
Line of thunderstorms
Thunderstorms affecting 40%/> area of 3,000 sq mi
What is a SIGMET?
Advises of non-convective weather that’s potentially hazardous to all aircraft.
CAT: clear air turbulence

Volcanic ash
Severe icing not associated with t-storms
What is a AIRMET?
Conditions at intensities lower than SIGMETs.
Issued every 6 hours.

What is a winds and temperatures aloft forecast?
Computer prepared for forecast, wind direction, wind speed, temperature at specified times, altitude, and locations.
Prepared 4 times daily
What valuable information can be determined from wind and temperature aloft forecasts?
Most favorable altitude: based on winds and direction of flight.
Areas of possible icing.
Temperature inversions.
Turbulence.
What is a center weather advisory(CWA)?
