Magnesium Flashcards
1
Q
What is the importance of magnesium in the body
A
It is a co-factor in enzyme systems that include protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control and blood pressure regulation. It is also required for energy production, oxidative phosphorylation and glycolysis. Skeletal development of bone and synthesis of DNA. Also involved in transport of calcium and potassium
2
Q
What are some causes of hypomagnesaemia
A
Inadequate magnesium intake and absorption, increased excretion due to hypercalcaemia.
Diabetes, alcoholism and use of diuretics
3
Q
Where can magnesium be of theraputic use
A
- Acute Myocardial Infarctions
- Arrhythmias (shown to be associated with hypomagnesaemia)
- Cardiac surgery (hypomagnesaemia is common after cardiopulmonary bypass surgery)
- Neuromuscular block,
- Asthma
- Eclampsia and pre-eclampsia
