Severe and accelerative,
Associated with neovascularisation of the choroid and haemorrhage.
What is the characteristic of stargardt macular degeneration?
Rare and occurs in teenagers
Risk factors of macular degeneration? (h: ABCS)
Age- >60,
Blood pressure- high,
Caucasian and high Cholesterol levels,
Smoking/ Sunlight exposure
Symptoms of macular degeneration? (4)
Progressive central visual loss,
Scotomas,
Decreased visual acuity,
Metamorphopsia
Investigations of macular degeneration? (5)
Visual acuity,
Visual fields,
Ampler grids (metamorphopsia),
Fluorescein angiography (neovascularisation in wet),
Bloods (FBC, U&Es, glucose, cholesterol)
Is there an effective treatment for dry macular degeneration?
No
Treatment for wet macular degeneration?
Oral vitamins,
Antioxidants,
Anti-VEGF therapy,
Photodynamic therapy
