MA - Nervous System III Flashcards
What are the 2 subdivisions of the Nervous System?
- CNS
- PNS
What is the difference between afferent and efferent?
Afferent- Carrying information into the CNS (Sensory)
Efferent- Carrying information away from the CNS (Motor)
What is the difference between somatic and visceral?
Somatic- (Body) Muscles, skin, bones, joints
Visceral- (Internal) Heart, lungs, digestice system, kidneys, reproductive system
What 3 things does the ANS control?
- Circulation of blood
- The activity of the gastrointestinal tract
- Body temperature
What 6 things does the sympathetic system do?
1) Increases arterial blood pressure, heart rate and force of contraction
2) Inhibition of pancreatic enzyme secretion
3) Inhibition of pancreatic insulin secretion
4) Dilation of iris (eye)
5) Decreased gut motility and secretion
6) Ejaculation in men
Where do sensory, motor and autonomic nerves all meet?
In the spinal nerve
What are myotomes and dermatomes?
Myotome is defined as a group of muscles which is innervated by single spinal nerve root.
Dermatome is an area of skin in which sensory nerves derive from a single spinal nerve root
What is a motor unit?
A motor neuron and all the skeletal muscle fibres it innervates (these contract together)
