M2: Central Techniques of the Cinema Flashcards
consists of joining one shot of a scene to a shot of another, both having a logical connection.
Cutting (Montage or Editing)
shooting of pictures of objects or scenes and joining them together to produce a particular sense or meaning.
montage
enables the director to show only the scenes the story requires to further its action and provide variety. It helps him eliminate unwanted scenes. He sometimes takes several shots of a particular scene and selects only of those that are important to his story. He uses cutting to build up a picture of an object, an action, or a person. Cutting can also make space seem larger.
Montage
The juxtapositions made by ____ are readily accepted because most often cutting is made invisible. The director makes use of ___- sp that we are hardly aware of changes from shot to shot; or if he so desires, he can make these transitions from one shot to another very obvious to emphasize the changes.
cutting, transitions
Some of these transition devices are:
fade, dissolve, iris-in-iris-out, turn-over
shows the old image gradually fading out and a brief period of darkness comes to the screen before the new scene gradually becomes invisible. It is used to show a change of time and a change of place.
fade
sometimes called mix, involves the superimposition of the last portions of the previous shot over the nascent portions of the next shot to show two events happening at the same time.
dissolve
a favorite device in silent movies, involves fades from the edges of the screen to the center after which the image grows in a widening circle from the center of the screen.
Iris-in-iris-out
shows the whole screen turning over and continuing to the other side.
turn-over
A change of view may be made by the continuous movement of the camera while shooting instead of switching from one shot to another. ______helps us experience the gradual growth or ideas or emotions.
Camera movement
If the whole camera is moved bodily while taking pictures of a scene, a _____is taken.
tracking shot
The camera may move forward, backward, vertically, diagonally, or horizontally. It may start off with a long shot of a scene and then move forward, closer to the object, for further concentration.
camera movement
If the camera is kept in the same place but turned on its axis, the movement is called _____. In a _______what is to come is unknown and what is left behind is gone.
panning, panning shot
Camera movement gives rise to _____ The camera may be moved in such a way as to create a familiar experience.
transference effects.
