M15.9 Flashcards
What are the tasks of engine oil?
Lubrication
Cooling
Cleaning
Corrosion protection
What are the 3 types of synthetic oil?
Type 1
Type 2
Type 3
What engines is type 1 synthetic oil used on?
Old engines
What engines is type 2 synthetic oil used on?
Modern engines
What type of a/c is type 3 synthetic oil used on and why?
Fighter jets because it has a higher thermal stability and viscosity at high temps
What is the major benefit of using synthetic oil in turbine engines?
Thermal stability
Why must opened cans of oil be disposed of?
Modern synthetic oils are hydroscopic
What are the advantages of synthetic oil?
Viscosity
Thermal stability
Pressure resistance
What are the disadvantages of synthetic oil?
Price
Skin irritation
Not always mixable
What is viscosity index?
The effect temp has on the viscosity of the oil
(Higher the number least effect viscosity has on high temps)
What is pour point?
Lowest temp oil will visibly move
What is volatility?
The likeliness of oil to vaporise
What is acidity?
How corrosive the oil is
What is oil foaming?
The resistance of the oil to separate from entrapped air
What is rubber swelling?
The amount of oil will cause a particular rubber compound to swell
What is oxidation and thermal stability?
Ability for oil to resist the formation of hard carbon and sludge at high temps
What is pressure?
The ability of oil to carry a load
What is coking?
Amount of carbon residue in the oil after heating
What is the most common fuel used in Europe?
Jet A1
What is the most common fuel used in USA?
JP1 and JP1A
Flash point and freezing point of jet A1 / JP1A?
Flash point = +38
Freezing point = -47
Flash point and freezing point of jet A / JP1?
Flash point = +38
Freezing point = -40
What fuel types is used on military a/c?
Jet B, JP4 and JP5
Flash pony and freezing point of jet B / JP4?
Flash point = -20
Freezing point = -58
Flash point and freezing point of JP5?
Flash point = +65
Freezing point = -48
How does temp affect the weight of fuel?
Colder fuel more dense then hotter fuel
What should you do if someone invests fuel?
Do not induce vomiting
Drink 1/2 pint of water
What should be done If fuel gets in the eyes?
Flush with clean water
What’s the problem with handling jet B fuel?
It’s high volatility makes it unstable
When dealing with a fuel spillage what must you ensure?
It doesn’t enter the environment
What are the requirements for fuel?
Low freezing point
Flash point low enough for good combustion but high enough for safe handling
Erratic fuel consumptions can be a sign of what?
Large amounts of water in fuel
What is a CAT 1 fuel tank?
A direct access door
(Head and shoulder only)
What is a CAT2 tank?
Direct access door
(Complete body)
What is a CAT 3 door?
No direct access has internal openings
(Wide enough for rescue)
What is a CAT 4 tank?
Only entree via internal openings
(Not wide enough for rescue)
