It is meant to reduce the risk of transmission of bloodborne and other pathogens from both recognized and unrecognized sources.
Standard Precaution in Healthcare (WHO)
Major component of standard precautions and one of the most effective methods to prevent the transmission of pathogens associated with health care.
Hand hygiene
Agents with no known potential for infecting healthy people
Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1)
Agents that are most commonly encountered in clinical specimens
eg. Bacillus anthracis, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus
Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2)
Agents with potential aerosol transmission. Disease may have serious or lethal consequences
eg. Cultures of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Fransicella, Brucella, Coxiella burnetii, Rickettsia rickettsia, mold stages of systemic fungi
Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3)
Agents that pose high risk of life-threatening disease
eg. Ebola virus, Smallpox virus, SARS, influenza virus, HIV
Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4)
