M1 Ch 3-3.1: Microscope Flashcards
Microscope
Instrument that magnifies an object
tenses change orientation of image (inverted)
Light microscope
visible light passes through and bent by lens to see specimen
used for living organisms but requires staining which kills cells
Magnification
degree of enlargement of an object
Resolving Power
ability of microscope to allow it to distinguish two adjacent structures and separate
(higher resolution=closer they can be , better clarity and detail)
Dissecting microscope
low magnification
thick objects can be examined
use for tissue
view correct image (not inverted)
Electron microscope
use beam of electrons =increase magnification and resolving power
cannot be used for life cells -works best in vacuum, preparation kills cells
Scanning
Cells coated in metal (gold) and beam moved back and forth across cell surface
Transmission
Beam transmitted through cell
details on internal structures
more bulky and expensive
Unified Cell theory
states all living things composed of one or more cells, that cell is basic unit of life and all new cells arise from existing cells
