Mana
A supernatural, vital force believed to dwell in a person, or a sacred object. Mana is linked to genealogical rankings, fertility, and protocols. It is protected by a set of rules governing actions and ritual, called tapu.

(Italian, meaning “almond”) a term that describes a large almond-shaped orb around holy figures like Christ and Buddha.
Mannerism
A style of later Renaissance art that emphasized “artifice,” often involving contrived imagery not derived directly from nature. Such artworks showed a self-conscious stylization involving complexity, caprice, fantasy, and polish. Mannerist architects tended to flout the classical rules of order, stability, and symmetry, sometimes to the point of parody.
Martyrium
A shrine built over a place of martyrdom or a grave of a martyred Christian saint.
Mastaba
A simple tomb that has four sloping sides and an entrance for mourners to bring offerings to the deceased. The body was buried under the ground with only space for the spirit to enter. It is Arabic for “bench,” a low, flat-roofed Egyptian tomb with sides sloping down to the ground.
Mausoleum
A monumental building used as a tomb. Named after the tomb of Kind Mausoles erected at Halikarnassos around 350 B.C.E.
