Dada
An early-20th-century art movement prompted by a revulsion against the horror of World War I. Dada embraced political anarchy, the irrational, and the intuitive. A disdain for convention, often enlivened by humor or whimsy, is characteristic of the art the Dadaists produced.

Korean “crown.”
Daguerreotype
A type of early photograph, developed by Daguerre, which is characterized by a shiny surface, meticulous finish, and clarity of detail. A daguerreotype is a unique photograph; it has no negative.
Darshan
In Hinduism, the ability of a worshipper to see a deity and the deity to see the worshipper.
De Stijl
Dutch, “the style.” An early-20th-century art movement (and magazine), founded by Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesurg, whose members promoted utopian ideals and developeda simplified geometric style.
Deconstructivist Architecture
An architectural movement or style influenced by deconstruction that encourages radical freedom of form and the open manifestation of complexity in a building rather than strict attention to functional concerns and conventional design elements (such as right angles or grids).

Di Sotto In Su
“From bottom up” a type of ceiling painting in which the figures seem to be hovering above the viewers, often looking down at us.
Diptych
A two-paneled painting or altarpiece; also, an ancient Roman, Early Christian, or Byzantine hinged writing tablet, often of ivory and carved on the external sides.
Dome
A concave shape whose concavity faces downward.
Donor
A patron of a work of art who is often seen in that work.
Doric
An order of ancient Greek architecture that features grooved columns and no grooved bases and an upper story with square sculpture called metopes.
Drum
Any of the cylindrical stone blocks composing a column that is not a monolith.
Drypoint
An engraving technique in which a steel needle is used to incise lines in a metal plate. The rough burr at the sides of the incised lines yield a velvety black tone in the print.
Dynasty
A succession of rulers of the same line of descent.
