Earthenware
Pottery made of clay that is fired at low temperatures and is slightly porous.
Earthworks
A large outdoor work in which the Earth itself is the medium.
Edo
An ethnic group of southern Nigeria.
Effigy Mound
A mound representing a figure or an animal very shallow relief sculpture.
Egyptian Canon
A set of guidelines, to give order to their art. This system was based on a grid of 19 squares high (including one square from the hairline to the top of the head, usually hidden under a crown).
Elements of Art
The basic vocabulary of art-line, form, shape, volume, mass, color, texture space, time, and motion, and value (lightness/darkness).
Elevation
Scale drawing of the facade, side, or back of a structure.
Embroidery
A woven product in which the design is stiched into a pre-made fabric.
Emphasis
The principle of drawing attention to particular content within a work.
Encaustic
An ancient method of painting colored waxes that are burned into a wooden surface.
Engaged Column
that is not freestanding but attached to a wall.
Engraving
A printmaking process in which a tool called a burin is used to carve into a metal plate, causing impressions to be made in the surface. Ink is pressed into the crevices of the plate and paper is applied. The result is a print with remarkable details and finely shaded contours.
Enlightenment
A philosophical movement of the 18th century marked by a solical rejection of traditional social, religious, and political ideas and an emphasis on rationalism.
Enconchados
Shell inlay paintings; tiny fragments of mother of pearl placed onto a wooden support and canvas and covered with a yellowish tint and thin glazes of paint.
Entasis
A column that deliberately bulges.
Entombment
A painting or sculpture depicting Jesus Christ’s burial after his crucifixion.
Environmental Art
An American art form that emerged in the 1960s. Often using the land itself as their material, Environmental artists construct monuments of great scale and minimal form. Permanent or impermanent, these works transform some section of the environment, calling attention both to the land itself and to the hand of the artist. Sometimes referred to as earthworks.

A framed painting worn below the neck in colonial Spanish painting.
Etching
A printmaking process in which a metal plate is covered with a ground of wax. The artist uses a tool to cut into the wax and leave the plate exposed. The plate is then submerged into an acid bath, which eats away at the exposed portion of the plate. The plate is removed from the acid, cleaned and ink is filled into the crevices caused by the acid. Paper is applied and an impression is made. Etching produces the finest detail of the three types of early prints.
Eucharist
The bread sanctified by the priest at the Christian ceremony commemorating the Last Supper.
