Lymphomas intro Flashcards
What is a lymphoma?
Abnormal, uncontrolled growth of lymphocytes in lymphatic tissues.
What does the lymphatic system include?
Lymph nodes
Spleen
Thymus
Bone marrow
What are the 2 main types of lymphoma?
Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL)
What are common symptoms of lymphoma?
Lymphadenopathy
Fever
Night sweats
Unintentional weight loss
What is the differentiating factor of Hodgkin lymphoma?
Reed-Sternberg cells are present.
What are Reed-Sternberg cells in HL?
Large abnormal cells derived from B lymphocytes, “owl eye” nuclei cells.
Typically binucleate, often surrounded by clear halo.
True or false: there are subtypes of Hodgkin Lymphoma
True
such as classical HL, nodular lymphocyte-predominant HL
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma can be further categorised. What are somecommon subtypes?
Follicular lymphoma (low grade)
Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (high grade)
Burkitt (very high grade)
Mantle cell lymphoma
What is used to stage HLs and NHLs?
Ann Arbour Staging
What classifies a Stage 1 lymphoma?
Single lymph node affected
What classifies a Stage 2 lymphoma?
2 or more lymph nodes on the same side of the diaphragm affected
What classifies a Stage 3 lymphoma?
Lymph nodes on both sides of the diaphragm are affected
What classifies a Stage 4 lymphoma?
Extra-nodal organ spread
What does (1-4) “A” mean for staging lymphomas?
A means there are no B symptoms present
What does (1-4) “B” mean for staging lymphomas?
There are B symptoms present
(fever, night sweats, unintentional weight loss)
