Hodgkin's and Non-Hodgkin Lymphomas Flashcards
What ages does Hodgkin Disease affect?
Bimodal
Teens and Elderly
What other condition is Hodgkin Disease associated with?
EBV (glandular fever)
What are symptoms of Hodgkin’s lymphoma?
B symptoms (fever, night sweats, unintentional weight loss, lymphadenopathy)
Painless rubbery lymphadenopathy
When does the rubbery lymphadenopathy become painful in HL?
After drinking alcohol
How do you diagnose HL?
Lymph node biopsy:
Reed Sternberg positive
Increased LDH (lactate dehydrogenase)
Increased ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate used to measure level of inflammation)
Decreased Haemoglobin
CT/MRI chest/abdominal / pelvis for staging
The subtype of HL, nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin’s, produces what cell?
Popcorn cells (variant of Reed-Sternberg cells)
What is the treatment for HL?
ABVD chemotherapy (drug combination:
Adriamycin
Bleomycin
Vinblastine
Dacarbazine)
What are side effects of ABVD chemotherapy?
Alopecia
N&V
Myelosuppression
Bone marrow failure
Infection
What is there a massive risk of for patients who had recent/ high dose chemo?
Febrile Neutropenia
What are signs of a febrile neutropenic patient?
Fever (38+)
Tachycardia
Sweats
Rigors (feeling cold/shivering)
Tachypnoea
What is treatment for febrile neutropenia?
Immediate broad spectrum antibiotics (eg amoxicillin and fluoroquinolone)
What is the most common type of NHL?
Diffuse large B cell (80%)
Burkitt’s NHL has a link to EBV and often causes what sign in children?
massive jaw lymphadenopathy
What are symptoms of NHLs?
More varied as many subtypes
B symptoms (fever, night sweats, unintentional weight loss)
Painless rubbery lymphadenopathy
True or false: In NHL patients, the rubbery lymphadenopathy becomes tender after drinking alcohol?
False
Not affected by acohol
