Lymphoid system Flashcards
What is lymphoid system
An organ system that is a component of ADAPTIVE IMMUNE SYSTEM
Function of lymphatic system
immune surveillance
antigen-specific immune response
immunological memory
Categories of lymphoid organs
Primary
Secondary
Primary lymphoid organs
Form and mature lymphocytes
Examples of primary lymphoid organs
Bone marrow and Thymus
Secondary lymphoid organs
Contain mature lymphocytes and initiate adaptive immune response
Examples of secondary lymphoid organs
Spleen
Lymph nodes
Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue
Bone marrow
B cells and Natural Killer Cells formation and maturation
T cells development
Thymus
T cells maturation
Why is thymus most active during childhood
In adults, it may be difficult to differentiate from adipose
Two parts of spleen
Red pulp: red blood cells- removes waste from the blood get rid of damaged blood cells
White pulp: white blood cells- make antibodies
Where are lymph nodes mainly grouped
neck
axillae
groins
lung
hila
mesentry
What do lymph nodes do
Bring together antigens and lymphocytes
Lymph nodes
Cervical nodes
Deep
axillary
femoral
inguinal
tracheal
pericranial ring
Functional components of lymph nodes
Stromal (lymphocytes)
Lymphatic (look out for antigens)
Vascular(delivers lymphocytes to lymph nodes)
