Lymphodema and Edema ☺️ Flashcards
1
Q
Exudate
- what is it
- appearance
- protein content and LDH ratios
- glucose and pH
- contents
A
Edema from inflammed tissue from increased vascular permeability/serous membrane damage
- cloudy, yellow, bloody
- high protein, quick coagulation
- low glucose, pH
- high effusion/serum LDH ratio
- many inflammatory cells
2
Q
Transudate
- what is it
- appearance
- protein content and LDH ratio
- glucose and pH
- cells
A
Filtrate of plasma, no changes in endothelial permeability Not associated with inflammation -clear, pale -low protein -normal glucose -high pH -low effusion/serum LDH -few cells
3
Q
Causes of leg edema
A
IMBALANCE BETWEEN HYDROSTATIC AND ONCOTIC PRESSURE
Immobility Pregnancy High protein HF Chronic venous/renal/lymphatic insufficiency DVT Lymphatic insufficiency
4
Q
Causes of lymphodema
- primary
- secondary
A
Turner’s, Noonans, Prader Willi
Radiotherapy - MOST COMMON
Surgery - MOST COMMON
Cellulitis
Filiarisis
5
Q
Management of lymphoedema
A
Treat underlying cause
Elevation, compression, massage
Good skin care - increased risk of infection
