Lymphocytes Flashcards
When does lymphopoiesis occur?
In the yolk sac. Seen in the circulation as early as 8 weeks into gestations max numbers at 6 months.
What are the primary lymphoid organs?
Marrow and thymus
What are the secondary lymphoid organs?
specific immune response is generated: spleen, adenoid, lymphoid tissues of the Alimentary and respoirotatrottracts.
How do lymphocytes migrate to the p blood?
Through capillary venules into the tissues of the lymph nodes, spleen or bone marrow via efferent lymphatic stream and thoracic duct.
What is the MALT, and that does it consist of?
Mucosal associated lymphoid tissue - diffusion of lymphoid tissue found in various sites in the body
Breast, lung, salivary glands, skin and eyes.
What is the GALT, and what does it consist of?
Gut associated lymphoid tissue, GIT
What does the lymphoid tissue consist of in the GIT?
tonsils
adenoids
appendix
peyer’s patches in ileum
Where are T and B lymphocytes stored?
In the MALT and GALT of some of the secondary lymphoid organs - defend against pathogens.
What are some of the structural characteristics of the lymphocytes?
Are both large and small
Very little cytoplasm
Appear as all nucleus
What is the normal % of lymphocytes in the blood?
20-45%
What is the reference range of lymphocytes?
1.0 - 3.0 x10^9/L
What are some types of T lymphocytes?
T and B, natural killer (closely related)
What is the major role of the lymphocytes?
In the immune response.
Are there more T or B lymphocytes?
T - approx double
How can T and b lymphocytes be differentiated?
Flow cytometer, using specific monoclonal antibodies to detect CD antigens specific to T or B cells. (for ID and enumerate)
