Basophils Flashcards
What is the normal % of basophils in the blood?
<1%
What is the normal reference range of basophils in the blood per litre?
0.02 - 0.1 x10^9/L
What are some of the physical characteristics of the basophil?
Lobed
Large black/purple staining granules
basophilic granules
Why are granules basophilic?
As they take up the basic component of the stains such as methylene blue.
What is the main role of the basophil?
In the allergic and inflammatory responses.
What do basophils and tissue mast cells arise from?
A common progenitor cell - which releases histamine when sensitised with an allergen.
What does an anaphylaxis reaction mainly consist of?
Bronchoconstriction and vasodilation.
What is a synthesis role of basophil and mast cells?
Synthesis of the anticoagulant heparin.
Where are mast cells found?
In the tissues?
What are basophils to mast cells?
Precursors.
What occurs when an allergen enters the body?
It stimulates the production of IgE which binds to receptors on the mast cells and basophils.
What are some causes of basophilia?
Allergic reactions.
Chronic myeloid leukemia.(CML)
