Lymphatics Flashcards
Where do lymph capillaries drain excess fluid from?
Interstitial spaces
Where are there no true lymphatic vessels found?
Superficial portions of skin
CNS (?)
Endomysium of muscle
Bones
What drains the lower body and left side of head, left arm, and part of the chest?
Thoracic duct
What drains the right side of the head, neck, right arm, and part of chest?
Right lymph duct
True lymphatic vessels were just discovered in what part of the CNS?
near dural venous sinuses
(lymph gets here from perivascular spaces that communicate with subarachnoid space –arachnoid villi–dural venous sinuses)
What factors increase lymph formation?
Anything that increases filtration and/or decreases reabsorption
What is the rate of lymph formation/flow in the:
- Thoracic duct
- Right lymphatic duct
- Total lymph flow
- Thoracic duct: 100 ml/hr
- Right lymph duct: 20 ml/hr
- Total: 120 ml/hr (volume of entire plasma volume is filtered each day)
What are 4 functions of the lymphatics?
- Return lost protein to vascular system
- Drain excess plasma filtrate from ISF space
- Carry absorbed substances from GI
- Filter lymph at nodes
What are lymph nodes?
meshwork of sinuses lined with tissue macrophages (phagocytosis), B cells, T cells, and dendritic cells
