Intro to Circulation Flashcards
What is the main function of the systemic circulation?
To deliver adequate oxygen and nutrients to the systemic tissues and remove CO2 and other waste products from the systemic tissues
-Also a conduit for hormones
What are the functional parts of the circulatory system?
Systemic arteries Arterioles and pre-capillary sphincters Capillaries Venules Systemic veins
What is the function of systemic arteries?
To carry oxygenated blood under high pressure out to the tissue beds
What is the function of arterioles and pre capillary sphincters?
Act as control valves to regulate local flow
What is the function of capillaries?
Exchange between tissue (cells) and blood
What is the function of venules?
Collect blood from capilalries
What is the function of systemic veins?
Return blood to heart/dynamic storage
Blood flow is proportional to what?
metabolic demand
What is cardiac output controlled by?
Local tissue flow
Is arterial pressure control independent of local flow or cardiac output?
Yes
What are the 4 components of vessels?
Endothelium
Elastic tissue
Smooth muscle
Fibrous tissue
What is the relative composition of the aorta?
Elastic > fibrous tissue > smooth muscle
What is the relative composition of a typical artery?
Smooth muscle > elastic > fibrous
What is the relative composition of a vein?
Elastic = smooth muscle = fibrous tissue
What is the relative composition of a capillary?
Only endothelium
