Lymphatic System Flashcards
Main components of lymphatic system
- Lymph capillaries- drain and process extra-cellular fluid
- Lymph vessels- reservoir for cells and plasma that leak from vascular system- transport lymph fluid back to circulatory system
- lymph nodes/glands- filters foreign particles
Role of lymphatic system
- Collect and transport fluid that escapes from blood capillaries to circulatory system
- protect from foreign matter
Describe the lymphatic system as a drainage system
- Blood comes into capillaries- high pressure/nutrients
- Capillaries smaller diameter- blood under pressure- plasma forced into tissue fluid
- Cells take water and nutrients needed by osmosis- extra fluid stays between cells(in extracellular fluid)
- Excess fluid passes into lymph vessels
- Lymph vessel joins with larger blood vessel(vein) plasma will be put back into blood
Lymphatic system as a non-specific defence system
-lymph enters lymph nodes contain cell debris, foreign particles, micro-organisms-penetrate body
-cause disease if not destroyed
-bacteria- trapped in mesh work of fibres as lymph flows through spaces in nodes
-macrophages destroy bacteria
-macrophages ingest particles by phagocytosis- protection from macrophages surround particle-take into cell- destroyed by enzymes
-cause of swelling of nodes- infection
Inside node that causes swelling- increase no. of lymphocytes- lymph nodes become swollen and sore
-nodes are in neck, arm pits, groin, and alimentary canal
