Lymphatic System Flashcards
Protects the body from foreign invaders that could potentially cause disease or death
Immune system
Consistes of cells vessels and organs that carry excess fluid back to the blood stream and filters potential pathogens from blood
Lymphatic system
Also known as swelling
Can occur due to damage or blockage of lymphatic system
Edema
Transports lymph
Lymph vessels
Permits fluid in 2 directions (in and out of capillaries)
Blood capillaries
Only allows movement into the capillaries
Lymphatic capillaries
What are the functions of the lymphatic system
Drains excess interstial fluid from tissues
Assists in carrying out immune responses
Absorbs dietary lipids and fats
Prevents physical entry of pathogens, flush them out or create an inhospitable environment for them
Barrier defences
Primary barrier to pathogen entry
Skin
Found lining areas of respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary and reproductive systems
Mucosal barriers
These are the chemical signals that lead to cellular immune response
Cytokines
Chemokines
Interferons
Opsonization
Signaling molecules used for cellular communication over short distances
Cytokines
Attracts cells to needed location via chemotaxis over long distances
Chemokines
Cytokines used by cells infected by viruses to warn Neighboring cells about the virus and stop viral replication
Interferons
Cytokines used by cells infected by viruses to warn Neighboring cells about the virus and stop viral replication
Interferons
