Lymphatic System Flashcards
Right lymphatic duct
Collects from the upper right corner of the body.
Thoracic duct
Collects from the rest of the body excluding the upper right corner.
Lymph organs
Bone marrow, thymus, spleen, lymph nodes and MALT.
Spleen
Largest lymph organ. Stores blood cells and destroys worn out red blood cells and platelets.
Lymph nodes
Collect and filter lymph.
Mucosal Associated Lymphoid Tissue
Includes tonsils, Peyer’s patches and the veriform appendix.
Components of the lymphatic system
Lymph, lymphatics and lymphatic organs.
Functions of the lymphatic system
Remove excess interstitial fluid, transports fat and fat-soluble vitamins and protects the body via lymphocytes.
Lymph
Colourless fluid in the lymph vessels. Derived from interstitial fluid.
Lymphatics
Lymph vessels. Supply all organs except the CNS.
Lacteals
Lymphatic capillaries in the villi of the small intestine. Absorb dietary fats and fat soluble vitamins.
Lymphokinesis
Movement of lymph through the body.
Factors which affect lymphkinesis
Milking by skeletal muscles, pressure differences, contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle and compression
B cell lifecycle
Mature in the bone marrow, then enter the bloodstream to fight invaders.
T cell lifecycle
Leave the bone marrow to mature in the thymus. Enter the bloodstream and travel to the lymphatic system.
