Lymphatic system Flashcards
Lymphatic system function (1)
A system of vessels and nodes that returns excess fluid tissue to the blood
Lymphatic system function (2)
Needed because plasma tends to leak out of blood capillaries
Lymphatic system function (3)
Most types of cells get their own oxygen and nutrients directly from interstitial fluid
Lymphatic system function (4)
Filter pathogens to be targeted by immune system
What is the pathway of flow in the lymphatic system?
Tissue fluid enters lymphatic capillaries, now it is lymph, moves throughout lymph vessels and nodes, returns to blood at veins at base of neck
Lymphatic system structure (1)
Very low pressure system, uses valves to maintain flow direction
Lymphatic system structure (2)
Lymphatic capillaries create a loose wall and have mini valves which are formed by loose edges of cells = form trap door
Lymphatic system structure (3)
Larger lymph vessels which have valves like veins
Lymphatic system structure (4)
Lymph nodes contain reticular CT, lymph flows thru nodes, immune cells collect pathogens on the way
Lymphedema
Accumulation of interstitial fluid due to poor lymphatic drainage
What is an example of lymphedema?
(extreme) Elephantiasis which is caused by a parasitic worm
